I loved this and had to pass it on with the bad news out of Cal. today.

You have a friend that wants to know why you read fanfic or why a straight woman reads slash. What story or stories do you share with them to help them understand?
I had one friend, who likes a good cry, read Water Rises by Jane Mailander. (I wonder if I will ever get through it without a handful of tissues?) The other one likes a good laugh and some escapism, I had her try Tryst by Roxie130. Then I had them try anything by LitGal. They both have continued to read fanfic. Although they now read some fandoms I don’t, I consider them successes.
So what would/have you used or recommended to show others what started you reading or writing fanfic? Or keeps you searching for a story you remember or might become your next favorite?

Torchwood Star John Barrowman Announces Addition to his Family
Posted By Freelance Writers Date: 29/02 Posted Under: Animal Charities, Animal Welfare, Celebrity Dog Owners

Torchwood star and West End performer John Barrowman has welcomed a new friend into his life.

The actor and singer has re-homed a Jack Russell Terrier from Cardiff Dogs Home.

John Barrrowman fell in love with the 12 week old pup who staff had named ‘Captain Jack’ whilst opening a new kennel block at Cardiff Dogs Home.

The Jack Russell Terrier had been found abandoned recently in a Cardiff flat and was being cared for by staff at the Dogs Home.

Accompanied by Captain Jack John Barrowman officially opened the four new kennels at the Dogs Home which have been built to house larger dogs and mothers with pups.

Councillor Judith Woodman, Cardiff Council Deputy Leader said:

“Cardiff Council is very grateful for the support of John Barrowman who has visited the Dogs Home to officially open a new kennel block. The new kennels have been converted from an old derelict building and were made possible by donations from two kind benefactors who bequeathed money to the Dogs Home last year.”

“Around 1300 abandoned and stray dogs pass through Cardiff Dogs Home each year. The new kennels will be used to house bigger dogs and for nursing mothers with pups. The donations have also helped to pay for the refurbishment of a vet’s room so that spaying and castration can now be carried out on site.”

John Barrowman said: “I was pleased to be invited to Cardiff Dogs Home to support all the good work that it does for abandoned and stray dogs throughout the city. As a dog owner and Patron of the Dogs Trust myself
I know how important it is to pass on the message of responsible dog ownership to all dog owners.”

During my visit to the Dogs’ Home I fell in love with a 12 week old Jack Russell Terrier who was recently abandoned in an empty flat in Cardiff. I have now adopted the little fella ‘Captain Jack’ as part of our
family.”

More Moonridge

I have two new pictures. One giving an idea of the difference between the baby blanket and the lap robe. The other a close up showing some of the detail of stitches that make up the blankets. These are both pretty basic but I can and have done more complex ones. Although I will never knit another Fan and Feather Shetland Lace baby blanket if I can help it. I tell my niece to take good care of it if she wants to use it for her kids.

Friends, family and members of my congregation love getting my blankets as wedding or baby shower gifts. And I make the lap robes for some of my more cold blooded friends. Just the right size for travel. Why is it so many of us wives are freezing while the hubbys are sweating while on the road I am not sure but there you have it. The lap robes are also a good size for when you are sitting in a chair at home or an arena. Big enough to tuck around but small enough to carry in and out.

My offer for Moonridge Auction

Here are some blankets that I have made. I am offering the baby blanket or a customized lap robe for Moonridge. I would love to offer the wolf cross stitch I have 3/4 of the way done but my eyes are so unreliable on these new meds I have trouble keeping the keyboard in focus, let alone an 18 count fabric. So I have no idea when if ever it will be done.

Your Brain is Green

Of all the brain types, yours has the most balance.
You are able to see all sides to most problems and are a good problem solver.
You need time to work out your thoughts, but you don't get stuck in bad thinking patterns.

You tend to spend a lot of time thinking about the future, philosophy, and relationships (both personal and intellectual).

Well I am back on chemo and back on medical leave. I still go into the office once or twice a week for a few hours, mostly to train others. It is a six moth leave, after which my short term disability runs out and we (the doctor and I) will have to consider, can I go back part time, full time or not at all. I am not ready to retire but I am not sure I will ever be up to full time work again. Thank God my husband is so supportive. I woke up crying in pain this AM and he got my pain meds, helped me shower and then put me back in bed. He keeps saying I need to do what I can and we will get by. He got a promotion and a raise this year but it will not make up for the loss of my wages if I can not go back to work.

He thinks I should take a course or two at the local college and go into freelance work. Set my own hours and all that. I am not so sure. Still it does mean I get some quality time with my cats and the laptop. There is a hot spot I can use at one of the doctors when I am there for tests. None where I get the chemo and not at the hospital. I can not believe that I am spending enough time with the local medical services that I know where to find hot spots. Or how these meds can make me ramble. Time to see if I can get back to sleep before the next dose is due. My prayers for everyone else to enjoy good health and contentment.

another rare update

Well that was an interesting holiday, and yes I mean that in the Chinese sense. A couple of our group homes are in areas that get trick or treaters, so we filled up bowls with candy and let the clients hand it out. As most years we saw plenty of kids and their parents walk by, not up our driveways. What is it with people. Those who did venture up the drive where greeted with smiles and loads of candy since we never seem to run out.

We did have one resident who wanted to go out trick or treating. We said fine even if at 19 you seem too old to most of us.
She refused the party the KOC and Parents Network threw for all the clients. (They looked great in their costumes. My favorites where the two brothers in their wheelchairs dressed as the Blues brothers. They seemed to be a hit with the others as well.) She refused the trips to the haunted houses. Even though this year Home Depot made an extra effort to accommodate all the clients handicaps, even opening early one night so the quieter more timid folks could see the house before dark. She did want to make up a costume. And she did not even come close to meeting the agreements in her ISP for a special outing with staff.

But she had to have several screaming fits that we would not drive her around the neighborhoods. She finally did take off with some school chums, much to the relief of her house mates. Not that it won’t be a relief to everybody when she moves out to her own apartment next month. Ah well teens can be problem children even if they are not yours and the handicaps do not make things easier for anyone.

Now it is time to call the families of our clients that have them and see if anyone is invited home for any of the holidays. Make plans to throw some parties and dinners for those who will be staying with us, and the for those who will be going home with staff for the holidays. First year staff are often surprised that where possible we let them work their scheduled shifts at home on those days. But if we have fewer clients to serve, you are willing to have them in your home and everybody gets to spend the day with family even if it is not yours by birth who loses? I do not do any holidays myself but I can see the way staff who have been here a few years try to be first to invite their favorites home, even if they have the day off and it does give me the warm cuddles. Hope anyone dropping in who has read this far had a good Halloween and is looking forward to more time with the families we choose as well as the one we might be born in to.

Labor day here and gone

What a nasty muggy weekend. Not that our visitors seemed to think so.

Living in a tourist town you just smile when they mention the weather. When we think it is cold they are saying how nice and mild it is, wearing shorts and tee to your jacket and long pants. Or they say "Well it's not that hot and it is a dry heat", when the humidity is in the 30s and the temp over 110. Well those of us who live here year don't think 35 is dry. Try 15 or better yet 10. When the humidity drops in to the single digits the long timers like my Husband and I love it. But it makes for a lot of nose bleeds for visitors. And sure a three day weekend spent in or on the lake with temps reaching 117 is not that bad, but we do it day in and day out from April or May until well in to October. And we are working, running errands all the rest. Now that takes stamina.

We did get a short storm last night, most of the visitors would have already headed home by then. For all the wind and thunder it did not produce much rain. Nor has any of the humidity moved out. So here it is my last day off and it is 91' at 8:15am with 34% humidity and a dew point of 58.7 all of which means the swamper is not working worth a darn and the air will be have to turned on soon. Yuck.

Even the beasties are just laying around making like small fur rugs. Well except for the snake, he is curled up in his water bowl getting ready to shed. We have Baggins the polydactyl kitty, Oreo the rescue kitty and Teah the milk snake. Silvie the Yorkie is just visiting.

Well I had best get to work before it is to hot to get anything done outside.

Welcome

Well here I am. Not sure what I am doing here but I'm making good time. For now just let me say I am a 50 years old, married to my beloved and home sick today. Since I have more than a few health issues this happens more often then I like. But if better by the weekend we hope to do some ridge running and explore a cave near a spring we found in the Spring. Want to see what has happened to the water level. The local falls have dried up but if you follow it back far enough you can still find seepages and a couple of small springs.
